HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros swimming & diving program sits in third place after day one of the Rice Fall Splash Friday at the Rice Competition Pool.
The Vaqueros (281) currently trail Rice (492) and Little Rock (282) and lead Loyola (73) and St. Thomas (49) after an eventful day one which saw three school records get set and 17 top 10 finishes.
The team of sophomore
Annaleagh Stahl, and freshmen
Jaydy Jay,
Sarah Bull, and
Dia Henderson set the tone for the Vaqueros, swimming a school record 4:00.60 in the 400 medley relay to capture sixth.
Henderson set two individual school records on the day as she finished eighth in the 100 individual medley (1:02.77) and 15
th in the 100 freestyle (54.26). Also in the 100 individual medley, sophomore
Ida Rudelius (1:03.12) and Stahl (1:04.02) finished ninth and 10
th, respectively, securing the most top 10 finishes in an event by UTRGV.
In the 500 freestyle, Jay secured ninth with a time of 5:25.44 while freshman
Ellinor Plant grabbed 10
th with a time of 5:28.48.
Stahl secured a UTRGV-high fifth place in the pool with a 2:05.94 swim in the 200 backstroke. Meanwhile, junior
Chloe Siegrist captured ninth in the 200 butterfly with a 2:34.90.
Jay continued her run of good swims, securing eighth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.40 while freshman
Ava Light came in .02 seconds behind to grab ninth.
The Vaqueros swam well in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Henderson, Rudelius, Jay, and Bull took sixth with a time of 1:41.44 and the team of freshman
Sasapin Sarawas, sophomores
Madiana Lofgren and
Kayla Noe, and freshman
Giovanna Pierami finished seventh with a time of 1:45.75.
To wrap up day one, sophomore
Manou Meulebeek took third in the 3-meter springboard with a score of 286.58 while senior
Delaney Murphy grabbed fifth with a score of 253.73. Freshman
Samantha Hill took sixth with a score of 224.48 in her debut on the 3-meter springboard.
The Vaqueros will continue their run at the Rice Fall Splash at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Rice Competition Pool.
