RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Southland Conference (SLC) announced the weekly volleyball awards Monday and, for the second consecutive week, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) juniors
Celianiz Cabranes and
Isabella Costantini were named the SLC Defensive Player and Setter of the Week, respectively.
These are the third weekly awards for both Cabranes and Costantini in 2025, and both have picked up one honorable mention. The Vaqueros have now won seven SLC weekly awards and tabbed four honorable mentions.
Cabranes averaged 6.0 digs per set to help UTRGV extend its winning streak to a program-best 12 matches last week. She was stellar in a competitive, defensive battle with UIW on Thursday, recording a match-high 27 digs with three assists and one ace. She was athletic and alert during the long rallies and helped the Vaqueros fend off the Cardinals down the stretch in a 3-1 win. On Saturday, Cabranes had 15 digs with two aces in a sweep of Houston Christian University.
The reigning SLC Libero of the Year is fourth in the conference and 18
th in the nation averaging 4.93 digs per set this season and has totaled 444 digs, which ranks fourth in the SLC and 35
th nationally. Cabranes has now recorded seven 20+ dig performances this season, bringing her career total at UTRGV to 19, one shy of tying the program record. She totaled 42 digs, four assists and three aces in seven sets last week.
Costantini dished out 13.00 assists per set to keep the best offense in the SLC producing at a high level last week. She had her seventh double-double in the gritty four-set win over UIW, recording 52 assists, 15 digs, three aces, three kills and two blocks in another stellar all-around effort. She followed that performance with 39 assists, six digs and two blocks in the sweep of HCU. Costantini has surpassed 50 assists in five matches this season.
Costantini totaled 91 assists and 21 digs through seven sets and showcased the versatility of the UTRGV offense, which she's running to a .269 hitting percentage which ranks first in the SLC and T-21
st in the nation. The reigning SLC Setter and Newcomer of the Year leads the conference in assists per set (10.51), service aces (49) and aces per set (0.54) and is second in total assists (946), ranking 17
th, 12
th, 12
th and 26
th in the nation.
UTRGV is closing the regular season on the road starting with a 6:30 p.m. match Thursday at Northwestern State.
