Sports Medicine Welcomes Elizabeth Murphy to Staff

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday the hiring of Elizabeth Murphy as an associate athletic trainer.

Murphy will oversee the women's basketball, men's golf, and women's golf programs for UTRGV. Prior to joining UTRGV, Murphy spent just over one year as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Houston Christian where she oversaw all medical care for their softball and volleyball programs.

Murphy provided a wide range of services which included the creation and implementation of all non-surgical and surgical plans of care, providing emergency medical services, maintaining consistent electronic medical records, and overseeing student employees assigned to softball and volleyball.

"I am thrilled to have Liz join our staff and cover our women's basketball and golf programs," Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Steven Kraus said. "She is coming in with a good variety of athletic training knowledge and skills, and I know it will translate perfectly with those programs. She also brings a personality that I think will be very easy to get along with and build relationships with her student-athletes and coaches. We're excited for her to be on board!"

Prior to Houston Christian, Murphy was pursuing her Master of Science in athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh. While studying at Pitt, Murphy spent the spring of 2024 with the men's and women's basketball programs helping to provide emergency and rehabilitative care for student-athletes.

"I'm very excited to get started with UTRGV Athletics," Murphy said. "I want to thank [Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics] Chasse Conque and Steven Kraus for the trust and the opportunity to be here. UTRGV and the Valley bring a great atmosphere that I'm honored to be a part of. Coach Lord and Coach Moore have great staffs and teams that welcomed me with open arms, so I intend to do my best by them. I'll see y'all in the fieldhouse, V's up!"

In the fall of 2023, Murphy worked with the Robert Morris football team once again providing emergency and rehabilitative care for the football team and cheerleading squad. Murphy also worked with the Pitt softball program during the spring of 2023.

In the fall of 2022, Murphy worked with Fox Chapel High School across all fall sports, but worked mostly with the football, volleyball, and soccer programs.

Murphy earned her Master of Science in athletic training from Pittsburgh in April 2024 and her Bachelor Science in health and rehabilitative services from Pittsburgh in April 2023.
