RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that sophomore
Armani Raygoza, of the baseball team, is the Killers Golf UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
Raygoza was a force at the plate, helping the Vaqueros go 4-0 this week with a midweek win over the Houston Cougars and a sweep of Southland Conference foe New Orleans.
On Tuesday, Raygoza launched a two-run shot over the right field wall to cap a six-run ninth inning in UTRGV's 9-5 win over Houston.
On Saturday, Raygoza went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and two runs scored which included another two-run home run to right in the ninth inning in UTRGV's 14-8 win over New Orleans.
On the season, Raygoza leads the Vaqueros in batting average (.391), hits (18), home runs (4), and RBI (16).
The Vaqueros are in the midst of a seven-game win streak and off to their best start since 2012, when they also started 11-2.
Up next, UTRGV visits #22 Southern Mississippi on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN+, before returning home to host the reigning Southland Conference Tournament Champions Nicholls in a 3-game series from Friday to Sunday.
