RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in a tightly played match on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The match remained scoreless until the 82
nd minute when Louisiana's
Sisley Stephens took a long pass from
Chloe Mueller and snuck it by a diving Compian. Six minutes later
Carson Glenn sped by the back line and lined it into the net for her second goal of the season making it 2-0.
The Vaqueros (1-3) and the Ragin' Cajuns (3-1) refused to give up anything as they remained scoreless through the first 45 minutes. Both goalies came in clutch for their teams as UTRGV goalie
Emilia Compian made three big first half saves while Louisiana goalie
Natalie Mayes denied the only shot she faced.
The Ragin' Cajuns came out in the second half and put pressure on the Vaqueros, but Compian once again stood strong in goal making her fourth save of the match to keep the match scoreless.
The Vaqueros returned the favor later in the second as they used the wind to their advantage. A UTRGV corner looked like it was heading into the net, but Mayes recorded the leaping save to keep the score the same.
Compian finished the match with a season-high six saves while Mayes recorded five saves of her own.
The Vaqueros were efficient with their shots as they took five shots, all of which were on goal, but were outshot 14-5.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sep. 4 when they host Texas A&M-San Antonio at 4 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Attendance is free but fans will need a digital pass to gain entrance. Fans can sign up for the UTRGV Soccer Pass at
