RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team dominated the Texas A&M-San Antonio Jaguars 10-0 for associate head coach
Audra Larson's first win as acting head coach on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The win is also UTRGV's first win at home this season and the 10 goals are the second most in program history and the most in a game since the program scored six against Alabama State on Aug. 24, 2019. The Vaqueros (2-3) had total control in the first half, taking 25 shots with 14 on goal with the defense not allowing a shot to the Jaguars (0-2).
Senior
Libbie Mayfield got the scoring started in the seventh minute when a corner kick from junior
Yiselle Bernal went into box and Mayfield flicked into the net for her first goal of the season.
In the 11
th minute, sophomore
Lisa Elowsson took the pass from junior
Linnea Eld and blasted on into the net to extend UTRGV's lead to 2-0.
Graduate student
Savannah Frisby got in on the fun as she headed a cross from senior
Olivia Trotter into the net for her second goal of the season to make it 3-0 in the 23
rd minute.
The Vaqueros capped the scoring in the first half as sophomore
Allie Cifuentes took a pass from Bernal and scored her first goal of the season in the 33
rd minute.
The second half was more of the same as the Vaqueros kept the Jaguars off the shot chart while taking 18 more shots, including 12 on goal.
After an own goal by the Jaguars gave the Vaqueros the 5-0 lead, Elowsson got her second goal of the match after stealing the ball and finding the back of the net in the 67
th minute to make it 6-0.
Sophomores
Libby Pole,
Olivia Smith, and
Jordan Matthews and senior
Olivia Trotter each added a goal to put a cap to the scoring.
The Vaqueros outshot the Jaguars 43 to 0 and 26 to 0 on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sep. 7 when they host Texas Lutheran at 11 a.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Attendance is free but fans will need a digital pass to gain entrance. Fans can sign up for the UTRGV Soccer Pass at
