RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that freshman Jorge Martin Sampedro, of the men's golf team, is the UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
 
Sampedro led the Vaqueros to a tied for fifth place finish at West Carolina's JT Poston Invitational. His exceptional play saw him finish in second place as an individual.
 
In his first collegiate tournament, Sampedro shined in round three as he finished with eight birdies, nine pars and just one bogey on the day to shoot a program-record 63, which was also the best round of the tournament. In the previous two rounds, Sampedro shot an even 70.
 
His final round propelled him to second place in the tournament with a program-record tying three-round score of seven-under 203.
 
Up next, UTRGV will head to the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, hosted by Rice, from Sept. 29-30 at Westwood Country Club in Houston.
