PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Grand Canyon University (GCU) Lopes on Tuesday at GCU Soccer Stadium.
The Vaqueros (1-6-1) and the Lopes (6-2-1) engaged in a hard fought first half with GCU taking control in the first half as they took eight shots with two finding the back of the net.
In the 30
th minute, Junior Diouf got the scoring started with his seventh goal of the season giving GCU the 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later, Diouf added another goal with a sharp shot passing UTRGV goalkeeper
Alexis Gonzalez making it 2-0 GCU.
The Vaqueros didn't roll over in the second half despite their deficit as they came out and put the pressure on the Lopes. In the 65

Sora Noda found a leaping junior
Eduardo de Oliveria in the box where he headed it home to cut into the Lopes lead making it 2-1.
The Vaqueros finished with all five of their shots coming in the second half with three on goal. UTRGV played with extra urgency in the last 10 minutes, but the Lopes defense didn't allow anything into the net.
Gonzalez denied the Lopes in the second half as he finished with three saves in the match.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Oct. 7 when they visit (RV) SMU at 7 p.m.
