RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team won its second-straight match, beating the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs 6-0 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Junior
Linnea Eld led the Vaqueros (3-3-0) with a goal and an assist for a career-high three points. Junior
Yiselle Bernal scored her first two UTRGV goals for four points.
Eld opened the scoring by feeding sophomore
Lisa Elowsson for a goal less than two minutes into the match. About 30 minutes later, junior
Olivia Smith sent a free kick to the middle of the box and Eld headed it into the net to put the Vaqueros up 2-0.
With about a minute left in the first half, freshman
Malaika Dadabhoy pushed the ball forward from the top of the box past a group of defenders to junior
Libby Pole who took advantage with a strike into the top right corner of the goal to make the score 3-0.
Early in the second half, Bernal took a shot from the top left corner of the box that hit a defender. Bernal collected the rebound, raced past the defender and shot low into the back right corner of the net to put the Vaqueros up 4-0.
Bernal added a second goal with about 10 minutes remaining and then graduate student
Savannah Frisby scored in the 86
th minute to complete the scoring.
The Vaqueros outshot the Bulldogs 26-2, including 15-1 on goal, while holding a 11-0 edge in corner kicks.
Junior
Emilia Compian (3-3-0) recorded her second shutout of the season, making one save.
UTRGV plays its next two matches on the road starting Thursday at 7 p.m. at Houston on
ESPN+.
