Women’s Tennis Set to Open Season Against #20 Texas Tech and Abilene Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis program is set to open their season with matches against No. 20 Texas Tech and Abilene Christian in Lubbock this weekend.
 
Last Spring
 
The Vaqueros ended last spring with a 9-8 record, including a 6-3 finish in conference play, which earned them the No. 5 seed at the Southland Conference Tennis Championships.
 
The Vaqueros bowed out in the quarterfinals to No. 4 seed NJIT in a 4-2 loss. The Vaqueros return eight from last year's squad and are excited to open the season.
 
No. 20 Texas Tech – Jan. 18, 11:30 a.m. – McLeod Tennis Center – Lubbock, Texas
 
UTRGV will open the weekend with a matchup at No. 20 Texas Tech Sunday. UTRGV is 0-6 all-time against the Red Raiders with their last matchup coming in 2022, a 4-0 sweep.
 
Last season, the Red Raiders advanced to the Round of 32 at the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament, earning a 4-0 win over Boston University and falling 4-1 to Stanford.
 
Texas Tech is home two ranked members, the No. 75 doubles team in Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy. Murphy is also ranked No. 110 in singles.
 
Abilene Christian – Jan. 19, 11:30 a.m. – McLeod Tennis Center – Lubbock, Texas
 
The Vaqueros will turn around and face former conference foe Abilene Christian (ACU) Monday.
 
Last season, ACU finished 6-13 with a 3-1 record in conference play. In the Western Athletic Conference Team Tennis Championship, ACU defeated Seattle U 4-2 in the quarterfinals before losing 4-0 to Grand Canyon in the semifinals.
 
The Vaqueros are 4-10 all-time against the Wildcats with the last matchup coming in 2024, a 4-3 win for Abilene Christian, in Edinburg.
