LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros swimming & diving program was defeated by the Little Rock Trojans, 193-127, after completing their two-day dual meet Saturday at Donaghey Aquatic Center.
Sophomore
Manou Meulebeek shined on the 1-meter springboard, setting a new program-record, scoring 316.95 and claiming first at the meet. Meulebeek's record-breaking performance also set a new facility record at Donaghey Aquatic Center, previously held by
Maria Sanchez Moreno from Arkansas. Senior
Delaney Murphy secured a second-place finish, scoring 243.30 in the event.
The Vaqueros opened the swimming events with a third place finish in the 200 medley relay as the team of freshmen
Sasapin Sarawas,
Jaydy Jay,
Dia Henderson, and
Madiana Lofgren combined for a 1:54.02 finish.
The Vaqueros won two individual events on the day as Henderson turned in a 54.86 performance in the 100 freestyle and Sarawas swam 2:11.89 in the 200 backstroke to claim victories.
The Vaqueros went 1-2-3 in those events as well. Junior
AJ Rogers (58.58) and Lofgren (58.60) earned second and third, respectively, in the 100 freestyle. Meanwhile, freshman
Marina Johnson (2:16.60) and sophomore
Lauren Uribe (2:33.14) claimed silver and bronze in the 200 backstroke.
In the 1000 freestyle, freshman
Ellinor Plant swam a 11:14.11 to claim second while Rogers shaved 11 seconds off her personal best to finish third with a 11:40.35.
Jay turned in three team-high performances, earning second in the 400 individual medley (4:49.08) and the 200 breaststroke (2:30.65) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.67).
UTRGV wrapped up the meet with a first and second place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Henderson, Sarawas, Jay, and Lofgren combined for a time of 3:50.36 to claim gold while the team of Rogers, Plant, Johnson, and sophomore
Mia Gonzalez earned silver with a time of 3:58.69.
The Vaqueros next meet is the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming & Diving Championships which will run from Feb. 25-28 at the City of Pharr-PSJA Natatorium. Fans can get their tickets now at
