RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced that the reigning Southland Conference (SLC) champion men's and women's golf teams raised a program-record $48,510 at the fourth annual UTRGV Golf Classic, presented by D. Wilson Construction on Monday at Champion Lakes Golf Course.

Team Uriegas Dentistry, consisting of women's golf alum Dr. Melissa Uriegas, Alberto Uriegas, Alberto Uriegas Jr., and Andrew Cabrera took first place at the classic with a 17-under 55, winning a trip to the Dallas Cowboys vs. Jacksonville Jaguars game on Dec. 28, courtesy of RGV Tours.

Men's golf alumni Willie Gonzalez and Mike Perez played alongside Jimmy Salazar and Javier Vargas to finish second at the classic, winning the use of a suite at a Vaqueros baseball game, donated by NAI STX.

Coming in third was 360 Medical, which featured the team of Rick Masso, Raul Nava, Saul Nava, and Brandon Schafer, winning four tickets on the 50-yard line of UTRGV Football's home finale against Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 14, donated by NAI STX.

In a couple closest to the pin contests, Dr. Melissa Uriegas hit a hole-in-one on the second hole, winning an indoor golf package from Pin High Golf Studio. Meanwhile, Roy Longoria won the contest on hole 17, winning a care package from Srixon Golf.

Alex Cortez hit the longest drive on hole 9 to secure an indoor golf package from Pin High Golf Studio and Kimo Gonzalez hit the furthest drive on hole 15 to win a driver from Srixon Golf.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who participated and supported the 4th Annual UTRGV Golf Classic, presented by D. Wilson Construction," UTRGV Director of Golf Houston Moore said. "The support we receive from our sponsors and community has a direct impact on the success of our men's and women's golf programs. Their generosity allows us to create more opportunities for our student-athletes, enhance their overall experience, and provide them with the resources to compete and succeed at the highest level."

Participants at the UTRGV Golf Classic, presented by D. Wilson Construction, enjoyed breakfast and lunch from Reyna's BBQ & Cocina, received complimentary beverages from L&F Distributors, drove GDJ Engineering-sponsored golf carts, and stayed hydrated with help from AlphaSupps and their newly released UTRGV-branded electrolytes, VaquerosLytes.

"We are grateful to the City of McAllen, Carlos Espinosa, and the entire team at Champion Lakes for their hospitality and collaboration in hosting the classic," Moore said. "This event continues to grow each year, and that support plays a significant role in helping us build something special here in the Valley."

In addition to the support from sponsors, UTRGV student-athletes were able to join the fun as teams could purchase two drives hit by members of the SLC reigning champion men's and women's golf teams.
