RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Every day, student-athletes, coaches, and staff for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) walk through the doors of the Vaqueros Performance Center (VPC) and are greeted by a name that has been part of the Rio Grande Valley for generations.
 
The Boggus Family Atrium represents more than one family's investment in UTRGV Athletics. It represents generations of commitment to education, the Rio Grande Valley, and the endless possibilities that emerge when the two come together.
 
Education wasn't a dream for the Boggus family. It was a rite of passage. Bob Boggus knew that the next step of his journey was earning a college degree, even as the Harlingen High School senior crossed the stage in 1973.
 
Boggus couldn't wait to get out of the Rio Grande Valley as he prepared for his freshman year of college at the University of Texas.

"I wanted to get out of the Valley," Boggus said. "We had traveled and done trips with my folks and all, but I couldn't wait to get out of the Valley back in 1973. Once I got to Austin, I realized, 'there's a whole new world out here.'"
 
After graduating from Texas in 1977, Boggus returned to the family business. At the time, the Boggus family had a dealership in McAllen and Harlingen. He worked his way through the dealership in McAllen, eventually becoming general manager of the dealership.
 
Throughout his 40 years of living in the Rio Grande Valley, Boggus watched the home he couldn't wait to leave transform into a vibrant, growing region, one that matched the energy he experienced in Austin while still cherishing the roots and family values that he had experienced growing up in Harlingen.
 
"The Valley is a much better place for people to come back to," Boggus said. "There is so much more opportunity here."
 
Alongside their success in the automotive industry, the Boggus family has long supported education across the Rio Grande Valley. For Bob, supporting UTRGV was a no-brainer.
 
"[The growth of UTRGV] is unbelievable," Boggus said. "It blows my mind. Every time I get an annual report on the number of students, it just blows my mind. I give [UTRGV President Dr. Guy Bailey] a lot of credit because he's driving the train and has good people on board with him. It's been phenomenal, and truly unbelievable."
 
Football in the Rio Grande Valley was often talked about and seen as a pipe dream. Boggus saw all those conversations, dreams, and visions, fall through. Then, UTRGV's feasibility study started to gain steam and media coverage, but Boggus remained skeptical.
 
"I'll never forget the first time I read in the paper that UTRGV was considering a football team," Boggus said. "I was thinking, 'God, that seemed almost impossible,' I mean you're talking about a major undertaking. A team, cheerleaders, a band, a place to play, and just everything that goes into a football game."
 
However, Boggus, who had just boarded a flight from Austin, saw College Football Hall of Famer and former national champion head coach Mack Brown boarding the same flight to McAllen, Texas. This was when he thought, "wow, this might really happen."
 
So, when approached by UTRGV administration to join the Football Founders Society, a select group of donors founded to bring college football to the Rio Grande Valley, he only had one answer, yes.
 
"I was on it, I mean I just said yes," Boggus said. "At that point, it was definitely going to happen, and there was no way I was going to pass on the opportunity to do my part."
 
Boggus was shocked as he walked through the VPC for the first time. Still under construction, the massive 45,000-plus-square-foot facility represented UTRGV's vision for the future of its football program.
 
"[The VPC] was like UT had built it, it's just a first-class facility," Boggus said. "Everyone should be proud of not just the UT System and not just [UTRGV], but all the different activities that's happened and associated with it."
 
Now, when student-athletes, coaches, and staff walk through the front door of the VPC, they will be greeted by the name of one of their biggest supporters, a name that has echoed throughout the Valley for generations, and a family that has always put education at the forefront of the RGV community.
 

 "Bob, Karen, and the Boggus Family have been longtime supporters and believers in UTRGV and the Vaqueros," UTRGV Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. "Bob and Karen were among the first to say yes to the Champions Club, then again to the Football Founders Society, and now they are leaving a lasting legacy through the Boggus Family Atrium – a prominent space in the Vaqueros Performance Center. They have been with us every step of the way throughout this incredible journey. We are incredibly grateful for their continued support, their passion for the success of our student-athletes, and their belief in what UTRGV Athletics can contribute to the Rio Grande Valley."
 
On August 30, 2025, Boggus saw his investment and work pay off as the Vaqueros took the field for their inaugural football game against Sul Ross State. The magnitude of the moment set in as Boggus looked around at thousands of fans donning the vibrant UTRGV orange and thought, "God, this is really happening."
 
More than five decades after leaving the Rio Grande Valley in search of more, Boggus found that his home had grown in ways he never could've imagined. After watching possibilities once thought to be impossible become reality, Boggus believes there is still more to come for the Valley.

"[UTRGV Football] has opened my eyes to the possibilities that are really endless today for the Valley," Boggus said. "I think about the [City of Pharr-PSJA Natatorium] and have heard from swimmers about how that facility is just incredible. I'm just enjoying sitting back with my wife and watching all this new stuff come to the Valley. It's just awesome."
