Track & Field Sets Two Indoor Program Records on Day 2 at Jarvis Scott Invite

LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) indoor track & field teams set two program records Saturday as they wrapped up competition at the Jarvis Scott Invite at Texas Tech's Sports Performance Center. 
 
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of junior Brownsville Hanna alum Alejandro Arellanosophomore Richard Young and seniors Daniel Siaffa and Derrius Henry ran a program-best time of 3:09.99 to finish ninth. 
 
Senior Kaliyah Poston broke her first program record as she took ninth in the women's 200-meter dash in 23.85, a personal best. Additionally, junior N Vanee Anchike earned a win in the women's mile, running 4:48.91 to take the No. 2 spot in program history behind her own record. 
 
Poston's 200 performance was one of many solid races in the event. The Vaqueros women collected nine personal bests in the 200 and made four entries into the record books. Sophomore Jizzale Davissenior Nayla Harris and junior Aniya Heckstall earned top 25 finishes in 12th, 19th and 21st, respectively, with the second, fifth and sixth-best times in program history. Junior Treasure Vallerie, freshman Dior Williamssophomore Saniyah Richardsonsenior Brownsville Hanna alum Aliyah Castillo and sophomore Trezur Connley all ran personal bests. 
 
Junior Lilliana Guerrero and senior PSJA High alum Faith Cruz followed Anchike with success in the mile. Guerrero ran the No. 7 time in program history of 5:00.76 in the event and Cruz notched a personal best. Junior Kailey Salazar and sophomore Diego Pina both ran personal bests in the women's and men's 600-yard races, respectively. Salazar was seventh in the women's race in 1:23.82 and Pina ran 1:12.71 to take 13th, adding to another good weekend for the mid and long-distance runners. 
 
The men's 200-meter dashers also stacked up personal bests. Young led the pack with a personal best 21.29 to take the No. 3 spot in the record books, and senior Corin Burns followed in 25th in 21.34 to take No. 5. Five other Vaqueros had their best races, including junior Keamonie Archiefreshman Derrick HahnHenry, freshman Braydn Gilliamand sophomore Jefferson Jean
 
UTRGV's women's 4x400-meter relay team of Castillo, freshmen Talyna Ligier and Madisyn Jacksonand junior Treasure Vallerie ran the fifth-fastest relay in program history of 3:45.51 to finish 12th
 
The men's jumps duo of redshirt junior Aaron Cooper and freshman Antwoine Warren headlined the field event performances. Cooper was seventh in men's triple jump with a mark of 14.86 meters, good for No. 10 in the record book. Warren finished eighth in men's high jump with the No. 3 clearance in program history of 2.10 meters. Senior Efe Latham was ninth in women's shot put. 
 
Junior Elizabeth Hernandez made her UTRGV debut in the women's 3,000-meter run and finished 10th. Junior La'Zariah Bethany was 18th in women's triple jump. 
 
UTRGV collected 18 personal bests on Day 2 of the meet and made 12 entries into the indoor record books. For the weekend, they racked up 29 personal bests and 25 new top times and marks. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action Feb. 25-26 at the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham.
