CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team finished tied, 2.5 to 2.5, with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in the South Texas Match Play, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, to retain the South Texas Cup on Friday at Corpus Christi Country Club.
The tie gives UTRGV and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 1.5 points each in the showdown standings as UTRGV maintains the 24.5-19.5 lead. The next showdown event will be tennis matches on March 21.
The Vaqueros got wins from junior
Natalia Rodriguez and sophomore
Pitchayapa Pungpho and half a point from sophomore
Zoe Hobbs.
Rodriguez controlled her match against Samantha Gibbs all afternoon long as she came away with the 3 & 2 win. Pungpho had to battle back after being down three after seven holes to pull out the 2 & 1 victory over Elsa Tornvall. Hobbs gave UTRGV half a point after finishing all square against Lucia Ramirez.
The Islanders got points after Tristand Gabbard defeated sophomore
Miriam Barcalova 2 & 1 in a tight match and after Amber Martin defeated sophomore
Kieli Saenz in another tight match 2 & 1.
The Vaqueros will be back in action from March 9-10 at the Riverbend Intercollegiate, hosted by Houston Christian University.
