BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Lamar Cardinals 2-1 in 10 innings on Sunday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Cardinals (8-4, 3-0 SLC) loaded the bases with one out in the first, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by
Theo Kummer.
That was the lone run against senior Los Fresnos alum
Víctor Loa, who struck out two in 3.0 innings. Sophomore
Mason Engel followed with a career-high 4.0 scoreless innings, striking out two. Junior
Carlos Vallejo (0-1) pitched 2.1 innings, striking out a career-high tying three.
The Vaqueros (3-8, 0-3 SLC) responded against in the second. Senior
Thomas Williams drew a leadoff walk and then senior
Hank Warren singled. Graduate student PSJA alum
Diego Villescas laid down a sacrifice bunt back to the mound, but
Jarret Williams' throw to first sailed up the right field line, allowing
Thomas Williams to score to tie the game at 1.
That was it until the 10
th, when with a runner at second and two outs,
Beau Durbin hit a walk-off single to end the game.
That made a winner of
Julius Carpio (1-0), who pitched 2.0 scoreless innings.
UTRGV hosts Texas Southern for two games starting on $2 Tuesday, presented by Church's Texas Chicken, at 6:30 p.m. Fans can purchase $2 general admission tickets and select concessions for $2 each. Fans will also be able to take part in Y2K trivia as part of Trivia Tuesday between innings.
