ABILENE, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros track & field teams combined to earn 11 victories Saturday to close out the Wes Kittley Invitational hosted by Abilene Christian at Elmer Gray Stadium.
Senior
Daniel Siaffa and junior
Kailey Salazar both set program records as UTRGV closed the season opener strong. Siaffa and junior
Joshua Mascall picked up two wins each on the track.
Siaffa won the men's 110- and 400-meter hurdles, running personal best times in both events. He set a new program record in the 110 race, running 14.05 to get the victory. His time of 51.17 in the 400 hurdles is the second-best in program history.
Salazar won the women's 800-meter run with her personal and program record time of 2:09.06. She lowered her own program record with the solid performance and now owns five of the top 10 times in the outdoor 800 record books.
Mascall was victorious in the men's 400- and 200-meter dashes, also clocking personal bests in both events. He ran 46.56, the No. 2 time in program history, in the 400 before making his second entry into the record books in the 200, running 20.90, which is No. 6 in the books.
UTRGV's hurdlers and sprinters had a big day in Abilene. Freshman
Dior Williams won the women's 100-meter hurdles with the No. 8 time in program history of 13.61. Redshirt junior
Ashley Lingueno tabbed a personal best of 14.41 in the event to finish fourth. In the men's 110-hurdles, sophomore
Jefferson Jean (14.40) took third and senior
Jaylen Critton (14.44) was fourth, running the sixth and eighth-best times in program history.
Behind Mascall in the men's 400, three additional Vaqueros finished in the top 5. Senior
Sam Johnson II was second in 46.88, taking the No. 9 spot in the outdoor record books. Senior
Derrius Henry tabbed a personal best of 46.97 to finish fifth, and junior Brownsville Hanna alum
Alejandro Arellano was fifth. Henry also clocked a personal record in the 200, finishing fourth.
The women's 400-meter dash crew also had a big day. Junior
Treasure Vallerie won the event in a personal best time of 53.81 to take the No. 7 spot in the record books. Seniors Brownsville Hanna alum
Aliyah Castillo and
Lilliana Guerrero also tabbed PRs in the race, finishing sixth and 10
th, respectively, in 56.55 and 56.95.
Guerrero helped the women's 4x400-meter relay pick up the win in 3:48.60. She ran the third leg with Salazar, sophomore Santa Maria alum
Mia Picazo, and junior
N Vanee Anchike.
Adding to the track victories was junior
Keamonie Archie. He won the men's 100-meter dash in 10.45, clocking a personal best and the No. 10 time in program history. Archie, a two-sport athlete who is also going through spring football practice, was eighth in the 200.
Freshman
Antwoine Warren and junior
La'Zariah Bethany earned wins in field events. Warren, who is coming off a Southland Conference (SLC) indoor championship season in men's high jump, opened his collegiate outdoor campaign with a first-place finish with a clearance of 2.16 meters. It's the second-best men's high jump in program history. Bethany marked a personal best triple jump of 12.30 meters to win the women's competition and tie the No. 9 jump in the UTRGV outdoor record books.
The Vaqueros totaled 17 personal bests Saturday. Sophomore
Saniyah Richardson had two, running 12.05 in the women's 100- and 24.74 in the 200-meter dashes. Lingueno also had two personal bests, adding her second in the 200 as she finished eighth in 24.65. Sophomore PSJA Memorial alum
Diego Pina ran a PB 1:53.90 to finish eighth in the men's 800-meter run.
The Vaqueros made 13 entries into the outdoor record books to close out the meet, bringing their weekend total to 14. They'll be back in action April 11 at the Cactus Cup in Kingsville, Texas.
