RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that graduate student
Sergio Lopez, of the baseball team, is the UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
Lopez dominated on the mound Friday against New Orleans to help UTRGV secure its first Southland Conference (SLC) win of the season. Lopez pitched a 7.2 scoreless innings while striking out a career-high 13 batters and only allowing three hits.
Lopez retired the last nine of the last 10 batters he faced, striking out six of them. He allowed just three singles and one walk while facing the minimum three batters in five different innings.
The Vaqueros won 10-0 in eight innings. Lopez's 13 strikeouts were the most for a UTRGV pitcher since
Angelo Cabral fanned 15 against Central Michigan on Feb. 24, 2023.
The Vaqueros would go on to secure the series on Saturday, their first SLC series win of the season, pushing their conference record to 2-4.
UTRGV embarks on a nine-game road trip starting Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Louisiana. Fans can listen online via the
