Track & Field Sets Three Meet Records, Collects Nine Wins to Close Cactus Cup

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) outdoor track & field women's team set three Cactus Cup meet records and the Vaqueros collected nine event wins Saturday to wrap up the meet at Javelina Stadium. 
 
Freshman Dior Williams had a huge day earning a pair of victories and meet records. She helped the women's 4x100-meter relay team get the win in a meet record time of 45.56, running the third leg along with redshirt junior Ashley Linguenosophomore Jizzale Davis and senior Kaliyah PostonThe relay notched the sixth-fastest time in program history. Williams also ran a personal best time of 13.28 to win the 100-meter hurdles with the No. 3 time in program history. Lingueno followed Williams with a second-place finish, also running a PB, in the short hurdles. 
 
In the women's 400-meter hurdles, freshman Talyna Ligier ran a personal best 1:00.59 to get the win with a meet record and the No. 4 time in program history. The men's hurdlers had success, too. Senior Daniel Siaffa won the 110-meter hurdles and was second in the 400-meter hurdles. Senior Jaylen Critton (14.15) and freshman JaDan Keiler (14.36) both ran personal bests in the 110 hurdles, taking second and fourth, respectively. Junior Jefferson Jean was third in the short hurdles and Keiler was third in the 400 hurdles. All four men's hurdlers entered the program record book in the 110 hurdles, with Siaffa and Critton running the Nos. 2 and 3 times while Jean tied the seventh-best time and Keiler ran the ninth-best time in program history. 
 
UTRGV went 1-2-3 in the 100 and 110-meter hurdles and the men's high jump. Freshman Antwoine Warren won high jump with a clearance of 2.01 meters while freshman Paul Agba and sophomore Zaire Cunningham both cleared 1.96 meters. Agba took second as he cleared the bar on his second attempt at the 1.96m height and Cunningham was third, getting the mark on his third attempt. 
 
The Vaqueros picked up their third field event win of the meet as junior La'Zariah Bethany marked a personal best 12.35 meters in the women's triple jump. She won the event and tabbed the No. 8 jump in outdoor program history. Freshman Avianna Miller followed in second with a jump of 11.91 meters. Senior Efe Latham took third in women's shot put with a mark of 14.67 meters. 
 
UTRGV's men's 4x100-meter relay team also earned the victory as junior Weslaco East alum Gael Romosenior Derrius HenryCritton and junior Brownsville Hanna alum Alejandro Arellano ran 40.96. 
 
The distance crews recorded a pair of victories. In the men's 800-meter run, sophomore PSJA memorial alum Diego Pina earned the win in 1:55.43 while freshman Weslaco East alum Adrianno Gonzalez followed in second. Senior PSJA High alum Faith Cruz won the women's 1,500-meter run in 4:39.86 and junior Lilian Mateo followed closely in second in 4:42.73. Cruz and Mateo both ran personal bests in the race. 
 
Freshman Jazmine Newsome took second in the women's 400-meter dash in 58.09. Poston and Williams contributed to the women's sprints success as Poston took third in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Williams added a fourth-place finish in the 200 to her strong meet. 
 
Sophomore Richard Young and freshman McAllen Memorial alum Roehl Rodriguez both made their outdoor season debuts with solid performances. Young took third in the men's 100-meter dash, running 10.48. Rodriguez, competing in his first collegiate track meet after a good cross country season, was second in the men's 1,500-meter run in 4:05.85. 
 
UTRGV totaled 28 top 3 finishes Saturday and finished the meet with 11 victories while racking up eight personal bests and making nine entries into the program record books at the Cactus Cup. The Vaqueros will return to action quickly as they head to California to compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational April 16-18.
