AZUSA, Calif. – Junior
N Vanee Anchike and the tremendous trio of women's 800-meter runners shined Friday as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) outdoor track & field teams opened competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California.
Anchike finished fourth in the women's 800 invitational race in a program and personal best time of 2:03.00, which is currently a top 10 time in the NCAA West. Senior
Lilliana Guerrero and junior
Kailey Salazar ran the Nos. 2 and 3 best times in program history, both tabbing personal records. Guerrero was 59
th with a time of 2:07.41 and Salazar ran 2:07.92, taking 71
st in a deep field. All three women's 800 runners in the invitational race won their heats.
Sophomore Santa Maria alum
Mia Picazo added to the solid women's 800 performances in the Open A race, taking 30
thin a personal best time of 2:10.67, which is the 10
th fastest time in outdoor program history. Senior
Abraham Morales took sixth in the men's 800-meter run Open B race, running a personal best time of 1:51.58. In the women's 5,000-meter run Open B race, senior PSJA High alum
Faith Cruz ran a personal best time of 17:14.35, which is fourth-fastest in program history, in a 31
st-place finish.
Sophomore
Jizzale Davis won Heat 8 of the women's 100-meter dash invitational in 11.97, taking eighth overall in the semifinals to punch her ticket to Saturday's final.
Freshman
Avianna Miller and junior
La'Zariah Bethany both tabbed top 10 finishes in the women's triple jump. Miller cleared 11.88 meters to finish eighth in a field of 38, and Bethany jumped 11.86 meters to follow in ninth.
Senior
Efe Latham was sixth in women's hammer throw, notching a personal best mark of 53.58 meters.
The Vaqueros totaled seven personal bests on Day 1 in California and made five entries into the outdoor program record books.
The Bryan Clay Invitational continues Saturday. UTRGV will get underway at 11 a.m. (CT) in field and track events.
