Women's Golf Ready to Compete in First-Ever NCAA Regional Starting on Monday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team is set to compete at their first-ever NCAA Regional when they tee it up on Monday at Seminole Legacy Golf Club, hosted by Florida State University.

Tournament Format
  • 18 holes will be played each day through Wednesday. 
  • UTRGV will begin play at 7:55 a.m. when their first group tees off hole No. 10.
  • The top five teams in the standings will advance to the NCAA Tournament.

  • UTRGV won the Southland Conference Championship for the first-time in program history.

All-Conference Honorees
  • UTRGV had a pair earn Southland All-Conference honors.
  • Miriam Barcalova was named the SLC Newcomer of the Year while also earning All-Conference First Team honors. 
  • Barcalova boasts a 77.0 scoring average over 10 events while recording a pair of top-10 finishes. 
  • Natalia Rodriguez earned All-Conference Second Team honors as she boasts a 76.7 scoring average over 10 events this season. It's Rodriguez's second-straight All-Conference honor. 
 
Preparing for the NCAA Regional
  • UTRGV enters their first-ever NCAA Regional after winning the SLC Championship. 
  • UTRGV didn't change anything in their preparation and is looking at the NCAA Regional as another tournament to get ready for. 
  • Once UTRGV found out which regional they would compete in, they tailored their practices to focus on their longer hitting clubs. 
  • "I think just looking back at how we spent this season practicing and preparing for conference and just really building off of that," Preston Saiz said. "Obviously, it paid off. We were getting lots of reps and lots of practice."
  • "We've kept things pretty consistent with what we have been doing," Zoe Hobbs said. "It's been the same amount practicing. Same drills. Same focuses. Playing 18 holes, the same amount just getting ready for the regional."
