#3 Baseball Faces Host and #2 Lamar in Must-Win Game Friday

BEAUMONT – No. 3 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team (26-28) and the No. 2 Lamar Cardinals (28-25) face off in an elimination game of Southland Conference Tournament Bracket Play on Friday at 1 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The winner faces the loser of the 6 p.m. game between No. 6 Northwestern State, which beat UTRGV 6-5, and No. 7 Stephen F. Austin, which beat Lamar 2-0, in an elimination game Saturday at 1 p.m. The winner of that game faces the winner of the 6 p.m. game Saturday at 6 p.m.

Conference Tournament Notes
  • This is the third time UTRGV is the No. 3 seed in a conference tournament. UTRGV went 3-2 as the No. 3 seed at the 2021 WAC Tournament, advancing to the WAC Tournament Championship Game. UTRGV went 1-2 as the No. 3 seed at the 2023 WAC Tournament. At both tournaments, UTRGV won its first game.
  • UTRGV is 15-30 all-time in NCAA Division I conference tournaments, including a 2-2 record in the Southland (2025-present), 7-12 record in the WAC (2014-24), 4-7 in the Great West (2010-13), 2-4 in the Sun Belt (1992-98), and 0-4 in the American South (1989-91).

All-Time vs. #2 Lamar
  • UTRGV is 55-80 all-time against Lamar in a series dating back to 1967.
  • UTRGV and Lamar have only met in a conference tournament once, with UTRGV picking up a 12-7 victory in the 1997 Sun Belt Conference Tournament hosted by Louisiana.
  • UTRGV is 20-32 against Lamar in conference play, including 3-3 in the Southland (2025-Present), 4-2 in the WAC (2022), 7-21 in the Sun Belt (1992-98), and 6-6 in the American South (1988-91).
  • UTRGV's most recent no-hitter was thrown against Lamar by Mike Karow during a 3-0 victory in game one of a home doubleheader on March 29, 1997.
  • Mike Cox tossed a 1-hitter at Lamar in an 8-0 victory on Feb. 22, 2000.

Last Time Out vs. #6 Northwestern State (5/14)
  • UTRGV dropped the Southland Conference Tournament opener to Northwestern State 6-5.
  • UTRGV hit seven doubles, tied for the second-highest total in program history and most for the Vaqueros since hitting a program record eight at Sam Houston on April 3, 2022.
  • Junior Armani Raygoza reached all five times, doubling a career-high tying three times and walking twice while scoring two runs and driving in a run. This was Raygoza's second-career three-double game, with the other also coming against Northwestern State (4/4/25 on the road).
  • Junior Rocco Garza Gongora hit a career-high tying two doubles while going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Junior Easton Moomau and senior Damien Whitfield also doubled. It was Whitfield's first double of the season.
  • Graduate student Colton Vercoe pitched a career-high 5.1 innings, striking out five.
