STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Tarleton State Texans 7-4 in the series opener on Friday at Tarleton State Baseball Complex.
The Vaqueros (25-26) scored all their first three runs via the long ball, as junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez cranked his 11
th home run of the season 370' to left off
Matthew McCullough (5-2) to give the Vaqueros a 1-0 lead in the second, and junior
Rocco Garza Gongora hit a 387' home run to right, his sixth of the season, to bring the Vaqueros within 4-3 in the fifth.
Graduate student PSJA alum
Diego Villescas added a two-out RBI-single in the eighth to bring the Vaqueros within 7-4.
Senior
Thomas Williams had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a walk.
The Texans (32-16) tied the game at 1 in the third, when with runners at first and second and two outs, a wild pickoff throw advanced the runners, setting up an RBI-infield single by
Carson Lorch.
In the fourth,
Ike Shirey hit a one-out double and then
Raphael Smeenk hit an RBI-single off graduate student
Colton Vercoe (4-5).
Kendyl Johnson followed with an infield-single before
Jake Tatom hit a bloop single and then
Slade McCloud hit into an RBI-fielder's choice to right to put the Texans up 4-1.
In the sixth, the Texans put runners at second and third with two outs. McCloud hit a two-run single and
Rayner Heinrich hit an RBI-triple to extend the Texans' lead to 7-3.
Anthony Treto pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.
UTRGV and Tarleton State play the middle game of the series on Saturday at 3 p.m. on
WAC International.
