UTRGV Sports Medicine Adds Muteba Dikanda as Assistant Athletic Trainer

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced the addition of Muteba Dikanda as an Assistant Athletic Trainer.

In his new role with UTRGV Athletics, Dikanda oversees athletic training for the men's basketball and men's tennis programs.

Dikanda joins UTRGV Athletics after spending the last two years with the University of Kentucky as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. While with the Wildcats, Dikanda oversaw all the athletic training of the track & field/cross country program. He worked alongside multiple coaches to manage different practice and treatment schedules, documented all treatments and plans, ensured individualized rehab, workout, and nutritional plans, and helped assist with first year master athletic training students. In addition, Dikanda helped Kentucky host the 2025 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championship and worked various SEC and NCAA Championship meets for both cross country, indoor, and outdoor track & field.

"We are excited to welcome Muteba to the sports medicine team," Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Shane Venteicher said. "His bright personality and positive attitude are an excellent fit for the UTRGV culture."

Prior to joining Kentucky, Dikanda spent a year with Florida State as an Intern Athletic Trainer. Dikanda assisted with Florida State's Floater, Cheer and Dance, Men's Basketball, and Swimming & Diving programs. In addition, he created and instructed multiple rehabilitation plans, encountered and managed acute care on the field scenarios, documented treatments and plans, and collaborated with multiple health care professionals. In addition, Dikanda worked the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming & Diving Championships and the NCAA Baseball, Softball, and Swimming & Diving Championships.

"I'm glad to be a part of the 956 family," Dikanda said. "I'm excited to get started and help the men's basketball and men's tennis program continue to find success."

While attending the University of Central Florida (UCF), Dikanda worked with the athletic department, assisting across various sports including football, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, and football. During that time, Dikanda evaluated and treated both acute and chronic injuries, worked as a liaison between athlete, coaches, and physicians, traveled with teams, documented treatments and rehabilitation plans, and helped mentor first year athletic training students.

Alongside his professional experience, Dikanda is a board-certified athletic trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. Dikanda earned his Master of Athletic Training from UCF in May 2023, his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in May 2021, and his Associate of Arts in General Education from Indian River State College in May 2018.
