RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team earned a lot of firsts in their win over the Concordia Tornados (CTX) Sunday, 5-1, at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (4-4) received first career goals from freshmen
Anuhea Aalona and
Londyn Johnson, and sophomore
Natalie Singleton. Sophomore
Sienna Church recorded her first goal of the season and Singleton capped off a career day with the final goal of the match, netting her first career brace.
In addition to the five goals scored, the Vaqueros tallied three assists with junior
Sienna Gillespie and freshman
Adelina Martel earning their first career assists and senior
Libby Pole notching her first assist of the season on senior day.
Concordia (0-2) received a late goal from
Emma Payne in the 74th minute to avoid the shutout.
In the 29
th minute, Johnson scored off a nice pass by Martel to Gillespie. Gillespie controlled the ball well after she received the pass from Martel. Gillespie danced her way into a clear path that allowed her to cross the pass to Johnson to make it 1-0.
UTRGV drew their second penalty kick of the season in the 38
th minute, when Johnson got tripped up in the box. Church struck the back of the net and rallied around her teammates in celebration to extend the lead 2-0.
The second half was vital for UTRGV as they continued their attack in the 56
th minute. The Vaquero's continued to add a pair of career firsts as Aalona found the ball in the box off a ricochet and faked out a Tornado, she created clearance and found the left side of the net with her left boot. This marked her first goal of the year after taking two shots earlier this season that found the hands of goalkeepers. Her shot on goal percentage remains at 1.000%.
Singleton connected on a header from an assist from Pole in the 58
th minute. Singleton was greeted by a mob of Vaqueros on the grass and was lifted off the pitch in celebration. Singleton and Pole have been working together in practice recreating that exact same moment for weeks.
The Vaqueros notched their fifth goal of the match and the second of the day for Singleton in the 84
th minute. Singleton lurked inside the box and found a loose ball while she did a complete 180 falling away in the attempt and shot the ball into the left of the goal with her dominate foot.
Concordia recorded a yellow when
Tatum Winn yellow in the 26
th minute by pulling the jersey of junior
Aura Zeledon. Winn later earned her second yellow in the 83
rd minute that would become a red card. UTRGV freshman
Melany Gallegos tallied her third yellow of the campaign in the 23
rd minute.
In her season debut in the 42
nd minute, freshman
Emily Segovia drew a yellow card. Freshmen
Angelina Burtini,
Sophia Sandoval, and Segovia, logged a combined 118 minutes played in their debuts for UTRGV.
UTRGV outshot CTX 29-5 with an 11-3 shot on goal advantage. The Vaqueros possessed the only corners of the day with 10. UTRGV tallied 10 fouls to the Tornados seven.
The Vaqueros hit the road to start conference play at LU Soccer Complex for a Thursday match against the Lamar Cardinals, which is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
