Michael Villarreal joined the Broncs as a volunteer assistant coach and camp director starting with the 2011 season.

During the 2012 season, Villarreal's coaching responsibilities included working with infielders during practice, throwing batting practice and positioning the outfielders during games.

In 2011, Villarreal worked with the outfielders during practice.

He is also in charge of directing the program’s baseball camps throughout the year.

Villarreal played his college baseball at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, graduating
 as the school’s all-time leader in saves. He is also second all-time in career appearances and fewest walks per nine innings.

In 2008, Villarreal had a 3.89 ERA and three saves in 41.1 innings.

He appeared in 26 games out of the bullpen in 2009, totaling 44.2 innings, striking out 47, and picking up three saves while finishing with a 4.03 ERA.

Villarreal was part of the 2010 Rattler Pitching staff that won the Heartland Conference Regular Season Championship, and advanced to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Villarreal graduated in May 2010 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise & Sports Science, and a minor in Criminal Justice. He was born in Eagle Pass, Texas, and currently resides in Edinburg, Texas.
