UTPA Soccer Loses to Monterrey Tech, 6-0

EDINBURG - Quick Bernardo Rodriguez conjured up three goals and Monterrey Tech's midfield hobbled Texas-Pan American in an international soccer exhibition Saturday, 6-0, before 150 fans.

Juan Romero struck the crossbar with a booming kick from 25 yards out, but Monterrey goalkeeper Gerardo Villarreal saved all five other UTPA Bronc shots on goal. Tech made six of its 11 shots.

Daniel Rodriguez, Fausto Hernandez and Fernando Ortiz scored Monterrey Tech's other goals. The Rams are 11-1 in Mexico this fall.

"We cannot afford to make four defensive errors against a team like this," said Dr. Miguel Paredes, UTPA coach. "They are deadly. It's important to consider that we did try some new players and new combinations today."

The first half, which ended 3-0, Tech made just one foul to UTPA's 16 as the faster Borregos outran the Broncs. The second half, Tech made 10 fouls to UTPA's four, and the Broncs threatened often. UTPA next plays Arkansas-Little Rock in Edinburg Sunday, Oct. 15.
