Broncs Place Fourth; Lady Broncs Sixth at Independents

The UTPA men's and women's golf teams concluded the 2006 Division I Independent Golf Championships in Windsor, CO on Sunday (Apr. 30) with the men in fourth place and the women in sixth overall.

Sophomore Kyle Tudi (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral H.S.) and senior Craig Berger (Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada/Wetaskiwin Composite H.S.) were the top finishers for the Broncs as both golfers finished tied for ninth place, 11 strokes behind Utah Valley State's Nic Van Vuuren for the individual title. Tudi and Berger both finished with final round tallies of 71 to give them each a three-round total of 221 which was five over par.

Shane Pearce (Carrollton, TX/Hebron H.S.) shot a 78 in his final round for a 224 (71-75-78) to end the tournament in a tie for 14th. Senior Colin Norris (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Cochrane H.S.) finished in a 32nd place tie with a final tally of 230 (78-82-70). Jeff Hensley (Van Horn, TX/Van Horn H.S.) ended the tournament in a tie for 44th place after a final-round score of 77 and a three-round total of 240 (81-82-77).

Northern Colorado won the inaugural Independent Golf Championships with a nine over par 873. UNC was followed by South Dakota State (881), Francis Marion (884), UTPA (895) and North Dakota State (895) which rounded out the top five.

For the Lady Broncs, senior Stefanie Maynard (Pflugerville, TX/Pflugerville H.S.) was the top performer. She shot a final-round 79 to give her a total of 244 (79-86-79), good for 17th place overall.

Nikki Boychuk (Conroe, TX/Willis H.S.) was consistent throughout the tournament, firing an 82 in the final round to give her a 247 (82-83-82), good for a 20th place tie. Daniela Cortes (Aguascalientes, Mexico/Colegio Portugal) ended the tournament tied for 24th with a final tally of 250 (81-82-87).

Freshmen Melissa Uriegas (Edinburg, TX/PSJA North H.S.) and Brownwyn Sandberg (St. Alberta, Alberta, Canada/Bellerose Composite H.S.) finished in a tie for 30th and 36th respectively. Uriegas had the second lowest score of the day for UTPA, shooting an 80 to bring her total to 256 (84-92-80). Sandberg also had her best day on the course with an 89. She ended play with a 277 (91-97-89).

The Lady Broncs took sixth with a 997 while UC-Davis won the championship with a 913. The rest of the top-five included Northern Colorado (947), South Dakota State (960), Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (966) and North Dakota State (971).

Both teams have one tournament left, the National Minority College Golf Championships, beginning on Friday (May 5) in Port St. Lucie, FL.
