KERRVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team used a second round seven-under par 281, a 16-stroke improvement from their first round, to propel into second place at the Southland Conference (SLC) Championship on Tuesday at Comanche Trace.
While the rain didn't fall as hard as yesterday, the Vaqueros still battled a constant rain throughout the day as they wrapped up their first round in the morning. UTRGV posted a first round 297, which put them in fourth place.
In the second round, the Vaqueros got off to a hot start as they played the front nine a combined eight-under par. The Vaqueros finished the second round with their 281 as they sit with a two-round total of 578 to climb two spots into second place and just four strokes off the lead held by Incarnate Word.
UTRGV has four in the top-15 through the first two rounds with sophomore
Gabriel Dulon Villoslada leading the way in second place. Freshman
Jorge Martin Sampedro is tied for third with junior
Esteban Gonzalez tied for ninth. Junior
Rodolphe Cicala is in 13
th and freshman
Brock Porter is tied for 33
rd.
Villoslada opened with a first round 75 but followed with a second round five-under 67 for a two-round total of 142. Villosalda recorded six birdies, 11 pars, and just one bogey in the second round as he sits seven shots off the lead held by Incarnate Word's Joel Talusen.
Sampedro carded a first round 76 before also posting a second round five-under 67 for a two-round total of 143. Sampedro also recorded six birdies, 11 pars, and just one bogey in the second round as he posted a front nine four-under 32 before posting a one-under 35 on the back nine.
Gonzalez wrapped up his first round with a team-best even par 72 with two birdies, two bogeys, and 14 pars. Gonzalez then posted a two-over par 74 for a two-round total of 146 as he carded a front nine even par 36 before posting a two-over par 38 on the back nine.
Cicala finished his second round with a two-over par 74 before posting a second round one-over par 73 for a two-round total of 147. Cicala poste a front nine two-under 34 with two birdies and seven pars. On the back nine, Cicala posted a three-over 39 with three bogeys and six pars.
Porter posted a first round 78 before posting a second round 77 for a two-round total of 155.
The final round of the SLC Championship will get underway on Wednesday with the first group teeing off at 10 a.m. The Vaqueros first group will go off at 11:30 a.m.
