UTPA men's tennis program dropped a 7-0 decision against 56th ranked TAMUCC on Friday (Feb.15) in Corpus Christi while the Lady Broncs recorded a 5-2 victory over Texas State Saturday (Feb.16) at home.
The Broncs fell to 2-5 on the season with the setback against the Islanders but will look to bounce back against Southland Conference-foe Nicholls State on Friday (Feb. 22) in Thibodaux, LA.
Doubles' competition started off the night for the Broncs as Brett Bernstein and Ashwin Vijayaragavan were unable to capture the top flight, falling 8-6 to Mikhail Pavlov and Dmitry Novikov.
Ivan Avila and Andrew Irving were on the edge of recording a huge win for the Broncs but dropped a 8-6 decision to duo Jose Zunino and Laurent Montoisy in the number-two spot of the rotation while Nirvick Mohinta and Marcus Dornauf suffered another hard-fought loss to Jan Cingel and James Langford with a final score of 8-7(5) in the third flight.
In singles' action, Avila fell to Montoisy 6-1, 6-1 in the top flight, while Vijayaragavan dropped the number-two flight by scores of 4-6, 6-0, and 6-2 and Mohinta suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setback to Novikov in the number-three spot of the rotation.
Irving dropped a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, and 10-8 decision to Zunino in the number-four position while Bernstein fell to Langford by scores of 6-3, 7-6 in the number-five spot of the rotation and Dornauf dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Cingel in the sixth flight.
The Lady Broncs started the afternoon off with doubles' action as tandem Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima recorded a 8-3 decision over Lainy Chaftiz and Andrea Giraldo in the top flight.
Duo Megan Bedeau and Silke Buksik collected a 8-3 win over Sumarie and Rabea Hartman in the number-two line-up spot while Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu dropped a close 8-6 decision against Ashley Ellis and Alejandra Gulida in the number-three spot.
In singles' action, the Lady Broncs were determined to close out the Lady Bobcats as Oliveira led things off with a domanting 6-2, 6-1 win over Giraldo in the top flight while Cirne-Lima picked up a hard-fought 7-6(4), 7-6(3) victory against Ellis.
Bedeau kept things going as she handed Hartman a 6-2, 6-3 setback in the number-three spot of the rotation while Willerding recorded a 6-3, 7-6(4) win against Lainy Chafiz in the number-four spot.
Team captain, Buksik handed Gulida a 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1 setback in the fifth flight while Cantu fell to Sumarie Miller 2-6, 6-2, and 6-1 in the number-six spot.
The Lady Broncs improved to 6-3 on the season and will look to capture their seventh win against Southland Conference-foe Nicholls State on Friday (Feb.22) in Thibodaux, LA.
