Broncs fall 3-0 to Fighting Sioux in last game of the regular-season

EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) to the University of North Dakota (UND) Fighting Sioux in their last regular-season game of the season Saturday, Nov. 13 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Broncs put up the first point of game one, and kills from Ijanae Holman and Marci Logan helped the Broncs stay on top. However, the Sioux came back fighting and took the lead 8-7. A kill from Rita Gonzalez and a service ace from Cassandra Trevino helped UTPA tie the score at 10, but UND was able to get back on top 11-10 following a Broncs error. Another kill from Logan and two from Jimena Gandara tied the game at 15, but the Fighting Sioux's Erin Joki added a kill that put North Dakota in the lead again 16-15. UTPA was able to tie the game again at 19 and 20, but could not get past the Sioux. UND won game one 25-23.

UTPA started ahead of the Fighting Sioux in game two, but UND quickly took control 10-3. Holman and Rita Gonzalez knocked down kills for the Broncs, but the Sioux were able to move ahead 19-10. Logan tallied a kill for UTPA in an attempt to stop North Dakota that brought the score to 19-11. Holman and Gonzalez were able to put up two more kills, but North Dakota won the second game 25-16.

North Dakota took control of the third set with a 3-0 lead, but was stopped by a kill from Gonzalez 3-1. The Broncs scored additional kills from Davis and Gonzalez, but could not stop the Fighting Sioux. North Dakota built a 10 point advantage 23-13, but were stopped by Gonzalez with a kill.  Holman recorded three additional kills for UTPA, but could not get past the Sioux. North Dakota claimed the match point 25-17.

Gonzalez led the Broncs with 8 kills and 18 assists. Logan recorded 7 kills, while Holman chipped in 6. Kaitlin Vasquez led the team defensively with 17 digs, followed by Ariana Bermea with 10 digs.

During a pre-game presentation, the team honored its seven graduating seniors - Ariana Bermea, Marci Logan, Cassandra Trevino, Charity Cucancic, Meghan Fichtel, Kaitlin Vasquez and Rita Gonzalez.

Today's match marked the last regular-season contest for the Broncs. Next week, UTPA will head to Chicago, Ill. for the Great West Conference Volleyball Tournament hosted by Chicago State University Nov. 19-21.
