Broncs fall to UND in 2nd round of GWC Tournament

CHICAGO, Ill. – The No. 5 University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs Volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-16, 29-27, 25-19) in Great West Conference (GWC) Tournament action this afternoon to the No. 1 University of North Dakota (UND) Fighting Sioux. This year’s tournament is hosted by Chicago State University. UND (24-5, 12-0) started game one on top, but Marci Logan scored the first kill for the Broncs (9-22, 4-8 GWC), and another from Jimena Gandara helped UTPA get within two points 5-3. UND slowly started to build a larger advantage, but a kill from Rita Gonzalez brought the Broncs back within three 16-13. The Fighting Sioux’s Annika Smed and Ronni Munkeby could not be stopped as North Dakota lead 22-14. Logan and Holman tallied two more points for UTPA, but the Sioux claimed game one 25-16. The Fighting Sioux notched the first two points of the second game, but Logan responded to put UTPA on the board 2-1. However, UND was able to get a 4 point advantage 9-5. The Broncs fought back when Fichtel and Logan responded with kills, and Ariana Bermea tallied a service ace to bring UTPA within one 9-8. Two North Dakota errors and a kill from Sarah Davis tied the game at 10. Another three Sioux errors and a point from Fichtel put the Broncs on top 14-12. The Broncs maintained their advantage until North Dakota stole the 23-22 lead. Two more kills from Fichtel took the 26-25 lead for UTPA, but UND was able to escape with a 29-27 game two win. Two kills from Logan and another from Gonzalez gave the Broncs the early 3-0 advantage in game three. Monkeby answered with a kill for the Sioux, but Gandara responded for the Broncs 4-1. North Dakota’s Erin Joki added points to help the Fighting Sioux tie the game twice at 8 and 9 before taking the 10-9 lead. UND then extended their lead to 4 points 15-11. A service ace from Davis and several Sioux errors brought the Broncs within one 15-14, but UND broke away for a 23-16 lead. Logan notched another kill for the Broncs, but UTPA could not get past UND. The Fighting Sioux claimed the match point 25-19. Logan, a GWC All-Conference Second Team Member, led the Broncs with 9 kills, followed by Fichtel with 7 kills. Kaitlin Vasquez recorded 10 digs.
