Final Stats
The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program (18-32, 7-18) dropped two to the NYIT Bears this Friday (May 21) afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with UTPA losing 15-9 in Game 1 and 5-3 in Game 2.
The Broncs played a 9-inning game in Game 1 and a 7-inning game in Game 2.
NYIT 15, UTPA 9
Timely hitting on the Bears part in a 10-run seventh cost the Broncs Game 1 after leading 7-5 in the sixth.
The Broncs were led offensively by Garrett Bivone who went 4-for-6 with two runs, one RBI, a double, and a stolen base. Ryan Vest added a 3-for-5 effort with a pair of runs, RBIs, and stolen bases. Abraham Garcia also finished with a 3-for-6 plate appearance with two RBIs, two doubles, and one run.
Texas-Pan American led quickly with two runs in the second on a Billy Donaho bases clearing double scoring Ryan Vest and Mike McCarthy. The Broncs then scored another three in the third on a Garrett Bivone double, which drove in Vincent Mejia. Bivone then in turn scored on a RBI single by Vest, who later scored on another RBI single, but this time by Billy Donaho.
Broncs starting pitcher Scott Wingo managed to give up NYIT's first five runs before being pulled in the top of the seventh after facing two batters. Wingo received a no decision in six innings pitched.
The seventh inning saw two pitching changes by the Broncs with Doug Roth taking hold of the mound, but only pitched one-third of an inning after giving up seven runs on eight Bears faced; Roth was tagged with the loss (1-2). Hayden Daughtery closed out Game 1 and only gave up one run on five hits.
NYIT's Frank Ryan (2-2) earned the win with 5 1/3 innings pitched. Ryan fanned four and walked four.
Note: Angel Ibanez, who finished 1-for-6, broke an 18-game hitting streak, the longest by any Bronc this season. Vincent Mejia and Garrett Bivone tie for the second longest with 14.
NYIT 5, UTPA 3
Texas-Pan American gained momentum late in the 7-inning game after giving up three runs in the opening frame. In his first start of the season, A.J. Franco gave up three runs on consecutive plays. Franco (2-1) earned his first loss of the season in five innings pitched. The RHP fanned four, walked two and gave up four runs.
After NYIT put up four runs by the top of the third, the Broncs answered back with lone runs in the third, fourth, and fifth. Texas-Pan American came within two after Stuart MacInnes hit a solo shot over the left field fence wall. The home run was the fourth for MacInnes.
The Bears extended their lead to 5-3 in the sixth and held off the Broncs in the remaining innings to sweep Friday's doubleheader.
MacInnes finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and home run. Vincent Mejia added a 1-for-2 effort at the plate with an RBI.
NYIT's Andrew Guarrasi (8-4) was credited with the win in six innings pitched.
Competition between the Broncs and Bears wrap up tomorrow with a doubleheader slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Saturday's doubleheader will conclude regular season play before the two prepare for the 2010 Great West Conference Baseball Championships hosted by UTPA beginning May 26-29.
