Three Broncs Reach Double-Figures in Loss

BEAUMONT, TexasJared Maree, Brandon Provost and Nick Weiermiller all scored in double-figures for the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team in a 60-49 loss to the Lamar University Cardinals on Monday at Montagne Center.
 
Maree led the Broncs with 13 points while Provost and Weiermiller each scored 10 points. Weiermiller hit 2-of-4 shots from behind the arc while Provost and Maree each hit one three-pointer. Weiermiller and Maree also tied Ruben Cabrera for the team-high with five rebounds
 
Maree and Earl Jefferson hit back-to-back lay-up as the Broncs (2-8) jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Mike James hit a pair of baskets for the Cardinals (6-3) to tie the game, but after a steal by Jesus Delgado, Cabrera hit a jumper to give the Broncs a 6-4 lead with 13:39 to go in the first half. The Cardinals scored the next six points to pull ahead 10-6, but Aaron Urbanus hit a three-pointer off a timeout to Bring the Broncs within one. The Cardinals went on another 6-0 run, but the Broncs responded with a 7-0 run to climb within 19-16. The Cardinals then went on a 12-4 run to take a 31-20 lead on a pair of free throws by James with 49 seconds left.
 
The Broncs came back to get within 36-32 on a three-pointer and a fastbreak lay-up by Provost with 14:05 remaining. Two minutes later, Maree hit a three-pointer to bring the Broncs within 40-37, but the Cardinals went on a 15-4 run to pull away.
 
The Cardinals were led in scoring by Brandon Davis, who finished with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting while hitting all three of the Cardinals' three-pointers. James scored 10 points and Devon Lamb recorded a game-high 14 rebounds (six offensive).
 
The Broncs return to the UTPA Fieldhouse for the first of two-straight home games when they face Texas A&M University-International on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
