EDINBURG, Texas- Sophomore guards Aaron Urbanus and Brandon Provost tallied a combined 48 points and 11 three-pointers to help lead the University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team to a 76-60 win over Great West Conference rival Houston Baptist Wednesday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The win breaks the Broncs 15-game losing streak.
The Broncs (4-21, 1-7 GWC) were red hot to start the contest. Urbanus dropped in his first three-pointer with 17:00 to play in the half to cap-off a 9-0 run to start the game for UTPA. Provost's three-pointer with 13:36 to play made the score 18-7, giving UTPA the 11 point advantage.
The Huskies (3-20, 2-6 GWC) cut the deficit to five at 20-15 when Jonathan Evans nailed a three-pointer with 11:05 to play until the intermission. The Broncs responded with a 10-3 run, as Provost's third three of the half gave UTPA a 30-18 advantage with 7:16 to play in the period. The Broncs led by as many as 17 in the first half, and led at the break 42-29.
The Broncs hit eight of their 17 three-point attempts (47%) in the first half and forced eight HBU turnovers that UTPA converted into 11 points. Andrew Gonzalez, who scored 33 in the last meeting between the two schools, scored 14 in the first half.
HBU was unable to chip away at UTPA's lead. The closest the Huskies would get to the lead was at the 15:37 mark when the cut the UTPA lead to 11 at 47-36 after a pair of free throws from Michael Moss.
Matt Mierzycki, who got banged in the mouth early and suffered a bloody lip, completed a three-point play with 12:34 to play in the game to give the Broncs a 58-38 lead. The 20-point advantage was their largest of the game. The Huskies would not get closer than 15 points the rest of the game, but were only outscored 34-31 in the second half. HBU shot just 30% in the second half hitting on only eight of their 27 attempts.
Urbanus finished with 25 points, adding four assists, and three rebounds to lead for UTPA. Urbanus connected on six of his seven three-point attempts. Provost finished with a career-high 23 points, adding four rebounds and a game-high three steals. Provost tied his career high with five three-point field goals in a game, connecting on five of his nine attempts. Ruben Cabrera finished a rebound and a point shy of a double-double with nine points and boards. Jared Maree played solid defense on Gonzalez, holding him to just two shot attempts in the second half, while scoring eight and dishing out a team high seven assists.
Gonzalez was efficient, scoring 20 points, but was limited to just seven field-goal attempts in the game. Fred Hinnenkamp was the only other Husky player in double-figures with 10 points adding five boards. Moss scored five and brought down a team-high nine boards.
The Broncs travel to Orem, Utah on Saturday night for their final road game of the season as they have their re-match with GWC rival Utah Valley University. The Broncs lost to the Wolverines last Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse 88-84. Tip-off for their game with the Wolverines is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
