EDINBURG, TEXAS- The University of Texas Pan American baseball team will try and snap their seven-game losing streak Tuesday night as they welcome the University of Texas-Brownsville Scorpions to Edinburg Baseball Stadium for the final game of the Battle of the Orange.
The Broncs (16-17, 6-6 GWC) are coming off a conference sweep at the hands of the Northern Colorado Bears this past weekend. Texas-Pan American scored first in three-of-four games against the Bears, but could not manage to hold the lead.
The UTPA offense is led by
Mike McCarthy who leads the team with a .354 batting average and 30 RBIs. McCarthy (10-game) and
Angel Ibanez (14-game) saw their hit streaks snapped over the weekend. Ibanez leads the team in runs scored (28) and stolen bases (8).
The Broncs, who have seven players batting over .300, lead the Great West Conference in batting average.
Luis Flores carries a 3.60 ERA and anchors a Bronc pitching staff that leads the GWC in ERA (4.85 ERA).
The Broncs lead the all-time series since both teams became four-year baseball programs at 5-0. The five wins came with UTPA earning two wins in each of the last two seasons. The Broncs beat UTB/TSC in the Feb. 22nd meeting with a score of 4-3. Digging into the history books, the Broncs (competing as Pan American College) had a 5-0 record against Texas Southmost College with five wins combined in the 1958 and 1963 seasons.
The Scorpions (32-21, 19-11) dropped the final two games of a weekend series with the University of the Southwest (N.M). They lost the final game 12-11 in extra innings.
Felix Fanaselle leads the UTB/TSC in hitting with a .409 batting average. Jorge Carmolinga leads the NAIA with 40 stolen bases this season. Danny Gidora leads the pitching staff with a 1.58 ERA and has a team record 10 wins.
The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
