OLD WESTBURY, New York – The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team began their season ending 10-game road trip on Friday, falling in both games of a doubleheader against Great West Conference opponent the New York Institute of Technology 7-6 and 13-0 at President's Field. The Broncs have now lost eight games in a row.
In the opener, UTPA (19-25, 8-14 GWC) fell behind 6-0 before they mounted a comeback in the late innings. The Bears (14-27, 10-9 GWC) scored a pair of runs in the first on a two-run homer by centerfielder Jerry Smith, his second of the season to put the NYIT up 2-0.
The Bears scored single runs in the third and fourth for the 4-0 lead. RBI doubles from Sebastian Grazziani and Robert Loftus added two more runs to the NYIT to make the score 6-0 Bears.
Vinnie Mejia would be the catalyst for the Bronc rally in the sixth with a solo-homer to left field, his fourth of the season, pulling the Broncs within five at 6-1. UTPA would allow another Bear run in the seventh and went into the eighth inning trailing 7-1.
Ira Hernandez drove in the Broncs' second run of the eighth on an RBI single to left to cut the deficit down to 7-3.
In the ninth the Broncs pulled to within a run but left the tying run stranded at first base.

Roger Bernal beat out a potential double play ball, with two runners crossing home plate in the process to pull UTPA within one. After an NYIT pitching change,
Stuart MacInnes grounded out to third to end the game.
Luis Flores (L, 2-5) took the loss for UTPA allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings of work. John Duggan (W, 3-4) picked up the victory for the Bears allowing just one earned run on four hits in seven innings of work. Ryan Dillabough came in to retire the final Bronc to pick up his fifth save.
In the second game the Broncs could not find an offensive rhythm against Bears starter Marcos Perez in a 13-0 defeat.
The Bears scored single runs in the second and third innings before putting up 11 runs combined in the fourth and fifth to run-away from UTPA. In the fourth Rob Caflero hit a solo homer to left putting the Bears up 3-0. Later in the inning George Carroll singled to drive in the fourth run of the game with NYIT up 4-0.
The Bears scored nine runs in the fifth inning, capped off by a grand slam by Effrey Valdez, to take the 13-0 advantage.
AJ Franco (L, 3-2) took the loss for UTPA after allowing five runs on eight Bear hits, walking one and striking out two. Perez (W, 3-4) was solid for NYIT as he scattered six hits and struck out four in the complete game seven-inning shutout win.
The Broncs and Bears will round out their weekend series tomorrow afternoon with another doubleheader. Game one will begin at noon ET at President's Field.
