IOWA CITY, Iowa – Guards
Aaron Urbanus and
Brandon Provost each scored 13 points as the University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team fell to the University of Iowa Hawkeyes 86-55 in their season opener on Friday at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
"I thought we played really hard," Broncs head coach
Ryan Marks said. "We had a tough combination playing against a team that is just physically so much stronger than us, and we were a little bit jittery. We wanted to get off to a little bit better start, and I thought we kind of righted the ship a little bit against a team that's so much physically superior to us. When you dig that big of a hole, it's a long way to come back."
Ruben Cabrera got the Broncs (0-1) on the board with a layup that made it 3-2 in favor of the Hawkeyes. Iowa (1-0) then went on a 14-0 run that was stopped by a
Jesus Delgado layup with 14:41 left in the half.
Josh Cleveland made it 18-6 Hawkeyes with a layup with 12:18 to play in the first half.
Urbanus got his only bucket of the first half after making a three-pointer that made it 27-14 Iowa. The Hawkeyes closed out the half on a 12-2 run taking the 45-24 first half lead.
Jesus Delgado scored 10 points in the first half on 5-8 shooting while the Broncs as a team shot 38%.
The Hawkeyes shot 39% in the first half but made 14 of their 20 free throw attempts. Zach McCabe led the way for Iowa with 11 points in the first half and adding five rebounds.
The Broncs got the scoring started in the second half as Urbanus hit a three-pointer cutting the Hawkeyes lead 45-27. Later Provost knocked down a three-point shot making it 50-32 with 17:30 left to play in the game. Iowa extended their lead after a jumper by Roy Devyn Marble that made it 65-35.
Later in the half,
Josh Cleveland capped a 6-0 run with a jumper that cut into the Hawkeyes lead making it 65-41. Iowa returned the favor with a 9-0 run to push their lead to 74-41. The Hawkeyes shot 52% from the floor in the second half defeating the Broncs 86-55.
Provost scored all his points in the second half and finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Urbanus added five rebounds with his 13 points, 10 of which he scored in the second half. Cleveland finished the game with 12 points while Delgado finished with 10.
Aaron White led the way for Iowa with 16 points on six-of-nine shooting. McCabe added 14 points and eight rebounds. Adam Woodbury and Marble finished with 10 and 11 points respectively.
The Broncs continue their six-game road trip as they head to Peoria, Illinois to face Bradley University on Monday November 11. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
