EDINBURG – Senior guard
Brandon Provost became the 23
rd player in University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program history to reach the 1,000 points plateau as the Broncs beat the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks 80-72 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Provost reached 1,000 points on a three-pointer with 12:10 remaining that put the Broncs (6-8) ahead 53-51. Provost finished with a game-high tying 19 points, giving him 1,004 for his career. Provost is the second Bronc to reach 1,000 points this season, joining fellow senior guard
Aaron Urbanus, who did so on November 24. It is the fifth time in program history that two Broncs have reached 1,000 points in the same season and the first time since the 1977-78 season. Urbanus finished with 16 points, increasing his career total to 1,094 and passing
Greg Guy (1992-94, 1,093) for 18
th place in program history.
Senior guard
Jesus Delgado also had 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half as the Broncs came back from down as many as 12 in the first half to outscore the Mavericks (3-11) 45-29 in the second half.
The Mavericks took that 12-point lead with 6:36 left in the first half on a three-pointer by
Alex Welhouse that made it 32-20. The Broncs responded with a 10-1 run on the power of two Urbanus three-pointers, a Provost layup and Delgado's lone basket of the first half to make it 33-30 with 3:42 to go, but the Mavericks outscored the Broncs 10-5 to take a seven-point halftime lead.
The Broncs opened the second half on a 13-2 run to go ahead 48-45 on a three-point play by Provost in the first four minutes. The game stayed tight from there, with the Mavericks taking their last lead at 70-68 on a
Matt Hagerbaumer dunk with 3:35 remaining. Sophomore forward
Lauri Toivonen responded with a jumper and junior forward
Justin Leathers made a free throw as the Broncs took the lead for good while closing the game on a 12-2 run.
Four Mavericks reached double-figures, led by
Justin Simmons, who scored 19 points. Welhouse and
John Karhoff scored 12 points each while
CJ Carter scored 11 points.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday, December 29 when they kick off a four-game road trip at Portland at 9:30 p.m.
