Men's Basketball Falls at Utah Valley

OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 74-64 on Saturday at the UCCU Center.
 
With the win, the Wolverines (20-10, 9-0 Great West Conference) clinch the outright regular season Great West Conference Championship and the #1 seed in Great West Conference Tournament.
 
The Broncs (11-18, 5-3 Great West Conference) outshot the Wolverines 45.3% to 43.6%, making the same number of field goals (24) in two fewer attempts (55). The Broncs also hit more three-pointers, 7-to-5, but the Wolverines were 21-for-32 (65.6%) from the free throw line while the Broncs were 9-for-14 (64.3%).
 
The Broncs were led in scoring by Brandon Provost for the third game in a row as he scored 15 points to go with a game-high five assists. Aaron Urbanus also reached double-figures, scoring 11 points to go with three assists.
 
The Wolverines were led by Isaiah Thomas, who scored 28 points, nearly half of which came from the free throw line (13-for-15). Geddes Robinson scored 15 points with 16 rebounds, three steals and two blocks while Holton Hunsaker scored 11 points.
 
Provost hit a three-pointer and two free throws to give the Broncs their first lead at 13-11 seven minutes into the game, but the Wolverines responded with a 22-6 run over the next nine minutes to take the lead for good.
 
Down 66-49 with 4:42 left in the game, Josh Cleveland used a pair of free throws, a lay-up and a dunk to spark an 8-1 run that saw the Broncs pull within 10 just over two minutes later, but that's as close as they got.
 
The Broncs return to action on Monday at 7:00 p.m. when they visit the University of North Dakota.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
