NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team (1-4) completes a stretch of three matches in three days when they visit the Northwestern State University Lady Demons (3-1) on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
Last Time Out
The Broncs are coming off of a 1-6 loss to Louisiana Tech University on Saturday.
Wanda Beguelin earned the Broncs' lone point, defeating
Maria Coronel in the #4 spot, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Techsters won the other five singles matches in straight sets, including a double bagel in the #6 spot, when
Alena Erofeyeva beat
Cindy Sands 6-0, 6-0.
Dana Nazarova played a strong match against
Laura Fernandez in the #1 spot, falling 6-2, 6-4.
Malin Andersen fell in the #2 spot to
Vivian ten Dolle 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, the #3 duo of
Blanca Garcia Izaguirre and Sands came closest to earning a win, falling to Fernandez and Erofeyeva 8-6. Beguelin and Nazarova played a competitive match with
Maartje de Wit and ten Dolle in the #2 spot, falling 8-4.
The Series
This is the eighth meeting all-time between the Broncs and the Lady Demons in a series that dates back to 1990. The Broncs are looking for their first win. The Broncs and Lady Demons haven't met since 2005.
Scouting the Lady Demons
The Lady Demons are coming off of a 4-3 win over the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.
The Lady Demons opened the season with a 4-3 win at Mississippi State, fell 4-3 the following weekend at Houston, and blanked Southern Mississippi 7-0 last Sunday in Hattiesburg.
Senior captain
Olga Bazhanova and freshman
Polina Konop are unbeaten in singles and doubles, owning perfect 4-0 records. They team as the No. 1 doubles tandem. Bazhanova is the No. 1 singles player and has two three-set victories already. Konop plays in the fourth singles slot.
Freshmen
Tatiana Larina (No. 3) and
Amy Williams (No. 5) are 2-2 in singles. Larina is teamed with Andrea Nedorostova in doubles at No. 2, where they are 3-1.
