EDINBURG, Texas – University of Texas-Pan American Broncs center fielder
Shane Klemcke hit a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the 10
th inning to lead the Broncs past the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds 6-5 in game two of a doubleheader to complete the 10
th annual Al Ogletree Classic on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs (4-0) trailed 5-3 after two and a half innings, and that's where the score stayed until the bottom of the eighth.
Vincent Mejia and
Iradier Hernandez drew walks to start the inning, and one batter later,
Brandon Roush singled to make it a one-run game.
Joe Karlik came out of the bullpen for the Thunderbirds (0-6) to try to shut the door, but after getting ahead of Klemcke 0-2, Karlik plunked Klemcke.
Derek Hagy followed with a sacrifice bunt to set-up
Roger Bernal's game-tying single.
With one out in the bottom of the 10
th,
Mike McCarthy singled and
Andy Fortuna reached on a fielder's choice that contained a throwing error by pitcher
Matt Nelson (0-2), allowing McCarthy to reach second base.
Andre Cordova pinch-ran for McCarthy and moved to third when
Riley Goulding grounded into a fielder's choice. Klemcke followed with a single to left to end the game.
Klemcke went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Bernal recorded his third-straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 while getting hit by a pitch. Bernal is now 11-for-17 (.647), reaching base in 13-of-19 (.684) plate appearances.
Dylan Badura (2-0) pitched two perfect innings of relief, striking out two, for the win in his Broncs debut.
Guadalupe Barrera pitched three shutout innings, striking out three, to keep the game close in the middle innings and set-up the Broncs' come back.
The Thunderbirds struck in the top of the second inning against
Michael Zouzalik.
Mitchell Kauweloa led off the inning by reaching on an error. Two outs later,
Jordan Zymola and
David Ricker strung together singles to plate Kauweloa.
Ronnie Burton followed by reaching on an error that allowed Zymola to score to make it 2-0.
The Broncs answered back in the bottom of the inning against
Chase Rezac. With two outs, McCarthy singled and
Jason Webb drew an eight-pitch walk. Goulding reached on catcher's interference to load the bases, Klemcke walked to force-in a run and Hagy hit a two-run single to put the Broncs on top, 3-2.
Tyson Weber led off the top of the third with the Thunderbirds' first home run of the season to tie the game. Three batters later, a runner at second and two outs,
Bryson Kenolio hit a home run to give the Thunderbirds a 5-3 lead.
The Broncs visit the University of Texas at Brownsville for the first time in program history on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
