EDINBURG, Texas –
Brandon Provost hit three-pointers on three consecutive possessions as part of a 19-2 run to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team past the California State University Bakersfield Roadrunners 73-67 on Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Provost's first three-pointer tied the game at 47-47 with 7:31 left, the game's first tie since it was 11-11. The next three-pointer put the Broncs ahead 50-49, giving the Broncs (9-17) their first lead since it was 5-2. Provost hit the shot with 6:25 remaining, and the Broncs led for the rest of the game. Provost scored 13 of his 17 points during the run. Overall he hit 6-of-8 shots, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc.
Aaron Urbanus kept the Broncs close throughout the rest of the game, hitting all four of his three-pointers before the rally. His first three-pointer tied the game at 11-11 with 13:45 to play in the first half, while his second brought the Broncs within 22-19 seven minutes later.
The Broncs trailed by as many as seven, and the first time it happened, at the start of the second half, Urbanus responded with a three-pointer to make it 34-30. Urbanus hit another three the next time down the court to make it a 36-33 game.
Urbanus finished with a game-high and season-high 21 points while complimenting his long distance shooting by hitting 9-of-10 shots from the foul line.
Jesus Delgado and
Jared Maree also reached double-figures in scoring, marking the fifth time this season that four Broncs have accomplished that feat. Delgado scored 13 points with a career-high five assists while trying his career-high with three steals. Maree scored 12 points.
The Roadrunners (12-13) used an early 7-1 run to take a 9-6 lead on an
Isaiah Grayson three-point play, and then maintained a one or two possession lead for most of the next 29 minutes.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by
Stephon Carter, who scored 19 points.
Zach Lamb scored 16 points and
Donald Johnson scored 12 while
Rashad Savage brought down a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Broncs return to conference action on Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. when they host NJIT at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
