COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Despite taking an early lead, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball fell to the No. 8 Texas A&M University Aggies 10-4 on Tuesday at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
The Broncs (8-1) jumped on Aggies (14-3) starter
Corey Ray right away.
Derek Hagy and
Roger Bernal started the game with singles.
Angel Ibanez reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and third. Ray threw to first to check on Ibanez, but it got away, allowing Hagy to score. Ibanez followed by stealing second and then scored on an RBI-single by
Vincent Mejia. Mejia advanced two bases on wild pitches, and one batter later, scored on an RBI-single by
Mike McCarthy to make it 3-0.
The Aggies loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the second against Palm View-native
Guadalupe Barrera on a walk and two bunt-singles.
Troy Stein and
Jace Statum hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to make it 3-2.
The Broncs added a run in the top of the fourth on a two-out single by Hagy, but the Aggies got that run back with a one-out double by Stein in the bottom of the inning.
Hagy finished 3-for-5 with a double while McCarthy went 2-for-4.
The Aggies tied the game at 4-4 on an RBI-double by
Jacob House in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Aggies took the lead in bottom of the sixth.
Zach Zouzalik (2-1) walked the bases loaded with one out.
Bryan Maxwell took over and
Tyler Naquin hit a two-run double. One batter later, House hit a sacrifice fly that scored
Mikey Reynolds from third. On the throw,
Matt Juengel took off from first, and the throw back to second allowed Naquin, who had advanced to third base, to score to make it 8-4 Aggies.
That made a winner of
Estevan Uriegas (3-0), who pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
The Aggies added two runs in the seventh inning to complete the scoring.
The Broncs and Aggies complete this two-game series on Wednesday at 3:05 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
