Maxwell Spins Shutout in Win Over Arlington Baptist

Box Score

EDINBURG, Texas – University of Texas-Pan American Broncs starting pitcher Bryan Maxwell pitched a complete game shutout in a 10-0 victory over the Arlington Baptist College Patriots on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The game was called during the bottom of the seventh due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Broncs (6-0) are off to a 6-0 start for the first time since 1979 and the third time in program history. In 1979, the Broncs opened the season a program-best 9-0. They also started 6-0 in 1976.

Maxwell struck out seven while scattering five hits and one walk, throwing 64 of his 101 pitches for strikes.

The Broncs gave Maxwell plenty of support early. Chris Torres and Mike McCarthy started the second with singles. One out later, Riley Goulding drew a nine-pitch walk to load the bases and Shane Klemcke hit a fly ball to left that was dropped to drive in the first run. Derek Hagy followed with an RBI-fielder's choice and stole second to set-up a two-run single by Roger Bernal to make it 4-0.

Hagy came through again in the fourth with a two-run single to make it 6-0, and in the sixth with a leadoff single that allowed him to score on a double by Bernal, who later scored, to make it 8-0.

Hagy finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Bernal went 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored.

Jonathan Garza pinch-hit to start the seventh, recording a double in his first career at-bat. The Broncs drew three-straight walks to force-in a run and load the bases. One out later, a wild pitch by Shane Griffith allowed Goulding to score to end the game.

The Patriots (8-13) had their best chance to score in the top of the seventh. Ivan DeLeon led off with a single. One out later, Josh Beckham singled. DeLeon tried to go to third, but was thrown out by Klemcke. Hunter Ray followed with a single, but Devin Patton struck out to end the threat.

The Broncs and Patriots complete this three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
