EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team beat Texas A&M University-Kingsville 7-0 in the home opener on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Broncs (2-5) made quick work of the Javelins (0-7) in doubles, as the #1 team of
Malin Andersen and
Sucica Strkic won 8-1 and the #2 team of
Wanda Beguelin and
Dana Nazarova each won 8-0. The #3 team of
Blanca Garcia Izaguirre and
Cindy Sands faced the toughest challenge, but scored five-straight points to close out an 8-2 win.
In singles, all six Broncs won in straight sets, including three double bagels as Andersen, Strkic and Beguelin all won 6-0, 6-0. Nazarova, Garcia Izaguirre and Sands each had a 6-0 set as well on their way to victory.
The Broncs return to action on March 16 when they compete in the Islander Classic against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, South Alabama and Sam Houston State.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
