LAS CRUCES, New Mexico –
Roger Bernal and
Vincent Mejia both homered for the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team in a 14-6 loss to the New Mexico State University Aggies on Friday at Presley Askew Field.
Bernal hit his home run in the third, a three-run shot, while Mejia hit his home run in the sixth, a two-run shot. Bernal finished 1-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Mejia went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
The Broncs (11-2) also got a run in the eighth when
Brandon Roush hit a pinch-hit RBI-double.
The Aggies (18-8) got on the board early and often, scoring in seven of the eight innings in which they came to the plate.
With two outs in the first inning,
Zac Fisher hit a two-run double and
Kyle Phillips hit a two-run home run off of
Bryan Maxwell (2-1) to make it 4-0.
Phillips finished 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Fisher went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
In the second,
Parker Hipp hit into an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 5-0.
Hipp went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
After Bernal's home run made it a two-run game, the Aggies scored three runs in the bottom of the third to again make it a five-run game.
The Aggies added two runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth to put the game away.
That made a winner of
Michael Ormseth (6-0), who allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out seven in six innings of work.
The Broncs and Aggies continue this four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 4:05 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
