LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – Trailing 11-3 after four innings, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth before falling to the New Mexico State University Aggies 11-9 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Presley Askew Field.
The Broncs (11-3) and Aggies (19-8) were tied 3-3 after three innings, but the Aggies scored eight runs in the fourth inning to take their 11-3 lead.
The Broncs loaded the bases with no one out in the fifth and
Chris Torres hit a two-run single to bring the Broncs within 11-5. Torres went 3-for-5.
The Broncs loaded the bases in the sixth as well, setting up a grand slam by
Vincent Mejia to bring them within 11-9. It was Mejia's second-straight game with a home run. He finished 4-for-5 with a season-high five RBI and a season-high two runs scored. The four hits tie his career-high and are a new season-high.
Mejia was the first batter faced by reliever
Randy Montoya, who bounced back to record the next five outs without consequence.
Scott Coffman struck out three over two scoreless innings to record his fourth save.
Broncs first baseman
Roger Bernal bumped his average up to .492 by going 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Dusten Knight (1-1) started for the Broncs, lasting three innings and giving up nine runs on 11 hits while striking out five and walking three. After
Jonathan Delgado allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning,
Preston Budziszewski pitched a career-high three and one-third innings of scoreless baseball, striking out three.
Dylan Badura also added a scoreless inning.
Trey Ross (1-0) got the win by pitching a scoreless fourth inning as the second pitcher out of the bullpen for the Aggies.

The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
