LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth to lose to the New Mexico State University Aggies, 9-8, in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Presley Askew Field.
Leading 8-7 after eight and a half innings, the Broncs (11-4) brought
Jonathan Sa (1-1) in out of the bullpen. He started by striking out
Robert Lecount, but
Kurt Snowley and
Tanner Rust drew walks to set-up a walk-off two-run triple by
Tanner Waite.
That made a winner of Aggies (20-8) reliever
Tyler Mack (1-1), who pitched two scoreless innings. The Aggies are now on an 11-game winning streak.
The Broncs jumped on Aggies starting pitcher
Adam Mott right away.
Derek Hagy,
Roger Bernal and
Chris Torres hit consecutive singles to open the game. One out later, Mission-native
Angel Ibanez hit his first home run of the season.
Mike McCarthy doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. One batter later,
Shane Klemcke hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
Hagy, Bernal and Torres combined to go 7-for-13 (.538) with five runs scored.
The Aggies loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman against
Michael Zouzalik to open the second. After an RBI-groundout, another walk reloaded the bases.
Bryan Karraker followed with the Aggies' first hit of the game, a grand slam to knock out Zouzalik and tie the game at 5-5.
The Aggies took the lead against
Dylan Badura in the third on a sacrifice fly by Snowley that made it 6-5. That was it against Badura, who pitched a career-high four innings of relief.
The Broncs loaded the bases with no one out in the seventh against
Justin Cooper (0-1).
Vincent Mejia grounded into a double play to score Hagy, tying the game. Aggies reliever
Jeff Neptune intentionally walked Ibanez and then threw a wild pitch to give the Broncs runners at second third. McCarthy followed with a two-run single to give the Broncs an 8-6 lead.
The Aggies pulled to within one on a double by Waite in the bottom of the inning. Waite finished 3-for-4 with two walks, three RBI and one run scored.
The Broncs and Aggies complete this four-game series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
