Baseball Wins Slugfest at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team sent at least eight batters to the plate in three different innings to beat the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners 18-13 on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field.
 
The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Broncs (12-5). It also snaps a seven-game losing streak to the Roadrunners (11-14) dating back to 2007.
 
Roger Bernal went 3-for-6 to raise his NCAA-leading batting average to .486.
 
Trailing 5-2 after three innings, the Broncs batted around for the first time to score five runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Mission-native Iradier Hernandez came up with a pinch-hit two-run double. Derek Hagy followed with a two-run single, and after a Bernal single, Mission-native Angel Ibanez hit an RBI-groundout to make it 7-5 Broncs.
 
The Roadrunners tied it up in the bottom of the fourth, but the Broncs sent eight batters to the plate while scoring four runs to take the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Will Klausing and Shane Klemcke had RBI-singles while Bernal had a two-run double in the inning against Garrett Staudt (0-1).
 
That made a winner of Zach Zouzalik (4-1), who pitched four innings of relief, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out three.
 
The Broncs led 14-7 after six and a half innings, but the Roadrunners scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a two-run game. The Broncs responded by batting around in the eighth to score four runs. The inning featured an RBI-single by Hagy and an RBI-double by Vincent Mejia.
 
The Broncs return to action on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. when they visit the No. 18 University of Texas in a game that will be televised live nationally on Longhorn Network.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
